In this scene, Jeffries is sitting in a chair observing everything that is going on outsife of this apartment window. In between dosing off and glancing at his watch, he notices the couple who sleeps on the porch move inside due to rain. He also observes a mysterious car a few times. What really interests him is this man with briefcase going in and out of the apartment across the alley with a briefcase. Jeffries sits at his window for hours just observing what is going on outside his apartment and tries to make sense of occurrences. In this case, Jeffries is not trying to make sense of a tragedy, but is trying to figure out why these things going on outside his apartment are so interesting to him. It’s obvious that he is waiting for some murder or crime to take place before his eyes.
